First Grade Market Teaches Skills and Service

First Grade Market Teaches Business Skills, Supports Children in Guatemala
Posted on 04/21/2017
First GradeThe Crossroads Academy - Central Street first grade class recently organized a baked goods market to support children in Guatemala, and in doing so, learned and practiced many business principles.

First grade scholars started this project-based learning unit by posing the question, "How can we, as first grade scholars, raise money for those in need?" As a class, the scholars decided to create a market where they sold goods and services to our community to raise money for charity.

In the process of creating their market, first graders learned about goods and services, supply and demand, and scarcity. As a class, they created a survey to send out to the school community to see what Crossroads Academy - Central Street students are interested in purchasing, thus learning supply and demand. After that, scholars made personal "business plans" for what they wanted to sell at the market, and promoted their market through advertisements posted throughout the school (practicing their persuasive writing skills) and a video commercial.

Every day, the first grade scholars graphed their market’s progress, which surpassed their expectations! In total, the students raised nearly $900 to support children living in poverty in Guatemala. Their profits will help provide three meals a day to children who live inside the Guatemala City dump.

Not only did this project incorporate many academic experiences and skills, the first grade teachers also hope that experiences like these help students begin to form a passion for helping those in need. It is yet one more way that Crossroads Academy - Central Street staff pursue the Crossroads’ vision: to see graduates of Crossroads Charter Schools that are scholarly, culturally literate and service-oriented individuals who will pursue their dreams relentlessly and have a positive impact on their family, their community and the world.
