Third Grade Explores KC Communities

“Lucky to Live Here”: Third Grade Students Explore KC Communities
Posted on 04/20/2017
ThriveCrossroads Academy - Central Street third graders recently completed a “Lucky to Live Here KC” project-based learning unit. Through this unit, students explored the questions, "What makes a neighborhood thrive? and "How can we be change makers in our neighborhoods?"

To answer these questions, scholars each selected a neighborhood to research, exploring that neighborhood’s history, learning how to share the story of a place, interviewing community change-makers and proposing improvements for their chosen neighborhood in KC.

Students also created a google map of Kansas City neighborhoods, distributed a survey about neighborhood characteristics, and completed a SWOT analysis of their chosen neighborhood.

Through these experiences and more, CACS third graders developed a better understanding of the characteristics of thriving communities and the opportunities that exist to be change-makers within them.

Project-based learning units like these help us fulfill our vision to create graduates who are culturally literate and service-oriented individuals who will pursue their dreams relentlessly and have a positive impact on their family, their community and the world.
